We're back, featuring another one of our favourite neighbourhood hangouts, the St. Catharines Farmer's Market at Market Square. Located at the corner of King and James St, beside City Hall and the Court House, this enclosed market is open year-round and is the best place to source local produce, baked goods, preserves, fresh flowers and cuisine. For as long as we've had our boutique location on James St, we've been coming to the market and meeting the fabulous people who make and grow our food and we've created some great friendships in the process!
The market is pet friendly, so Charlie Dog happily joins us on our hunt for lunch and local summer freshness! Bur first, coffee! Kurtis Coffee is always stop number one at the market so we can sip a cup of their delicious java while we shop. Made from 100% Arabica Organic Fair Trade beans, Kurtis Coffee is ground fresh daily and is one of the best cups we've tasted! We love buying fresh beans and now they have individual serving cups so, for those of you with a Keurig, you can enjoy single servings of this local, fair trade coffee at home too!
Next up is a visit to Meyers Flowers to brighten up the shop with some fresh blooms! Cut less than 24 hours before they are in your hands, these fresh flowers are well priced and will last longer than the ones you find at the grocery store. Grown in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Meyers Farm alongside 450 acres of orchards and vineyard space, the Meyers Family have been farming since 1955 and now, four generations later, quality and freshness is still at the heart of everything they grow. We love their long stem flowers for tall arrangements and an awesome pop of colour.
After browsing, sampling and buying more local freshness we stop at our final destination and our search for lunch is complete! Featuring the best Mexican food in Niagara, Eh Jose is a must try if you are looking for authentic and delicious Mexican fare. As he says on his website, José knows the majority of his regulars by name, and always greets you with a smile. From his incomparable guacamole to his chicken quesadillas, this is the real deal and a must try. José offers catering and cooking classes now and we are seriously thinking about taking one of his classes so we can bring some of these flavours to our own home cooking!
On this trip out to the market we had two separate people compliment and ask where we bought our outfits, and no surprise, they are Lousje & Bean originals! Another great perk of buying local- those shoppers don't have far to go if they want to sample Lousje & Bean too! :) For those who are inquiring, Lousje is wearing our classic Denim Pipe Dress over Black Crunch Leggings. Bean has a Black Tank Dress on layered with a retired classic Tunnel Tunic (Similar style to our current Jumper Tunic).
We make a trip to the market at least once a week, all year round so perhaps next time we're out we"ll see you there too! Open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 6am to 2pm, rain, snow or shine! We are so lucky to live in an area with such amazing fresh produce and creative chefs that take that freshness and turn it into delicious meals. Join us in the neighbourhood and let us know what your favourite stalls are at the market. Be sure to stop by to say hi when you visit and show us your market finds!
